The landing page should be short! No, god damn it, I like browsing; if it's short, I cannot understand anything.
I hear these kinds of arguments all the time from marketers and entrepreneurs.
Here is a dialogue which I had with a marketer friend (he prefers short copy):
Stefan:
Should the landing page be explicit like ClickUp or relatively short like Atlassian?
Friend:
I like short copy, and I don't have time to waste. Atlassian is doing a great job, and they are very concise.
Stefan:
Yeah, they are but did you check their website before? I see a trend that the more known the company is, the shorter the copy.
Friend:
Do you have an explanation for this?
Stefan:
Yes, the more brand awareness a particular company gets, the less they have to explain. People already know what they do, so they instead cut the clutter. Newer companies or complicated products that are building demand need more copy on their website to explain what they are about.
Friend:
I'm afraid I have to disagree; they should opt-in for a short copy as well.
Some prefer long copy and long pages, and some like short copy and conciseness.
One thing remains true; people have less and less time to engage with your website's copy, the attention span is shrinking.
On the other hand, if you know your audience very well and keep them on the site with good copy and valuable content, it won't hurt to put all that information available.
I am curious about the opinions of Pedro Cortés,Peep Laja
Are you a proponent of long or short copy on the website?
Size matters. Long!
Size does not matter. Short!
Long for startups, short for brands.
