The data you get from sales is one channel you can use to inform yourself about what customers want. There are many other tools, listening to communities, influencers, qualitative market research, Wynter, and focus groups.
Unfortunately, very often marketers fall in love with their product and not with the customer.
There is no cure for this.
Unless you understand your customer better than you understand your product, none of the gimmicks you use will work.
Start simple.
