Maker vs. Manager, Meeting vs. No meeting. Who will win?
Kudos to Paul Graham for his famous article 📚
This revolutionary article coined the terms Maker and Manager. And the more I work as a digital nomad, the more I can understand the difference in results and managerial tactics each has 🧠 .
By definition, makers tend to focus more on dedication and results 🎯 . Dividing a task by actions and completing it in uninterrupted steps. On the other hand, managers maximize productivity by organizing their associates on their expertise through specific tasks, promoting collaboration ⌛ . It is the most common managerial approach in a corporate environment.
With the rise of hybrid and online work positions, now more than ever, scheduling, productivity, and time management have become essential skills in the workplace.
A manager schedule is the schedule of command, which is divided into large portions of time to dedicate individually to a task. Which has become a more beneficial schedule in a hybrid environment as there is more task clarity and time pressure inflicted on it, mimicking the pressure of performance in an office environment 📅 .
On the other hand, taking a maker's schedule has become tricky in an online environment. Maintaining productivity has become a challenge. There are more challenges in communication, attention, and control which have led to burnout and lack of motivation 😕 .
Finding the middle ground and establishing clear goals, and dividing the project by task. Working in an online environment has created the need for more mindful meetings and encouraging clearer and more concise team communication.
Allocating time mindfully is essential in creating a teamwork style where productivity avoids becoming burnout. Now, more than ever, analytics has become an essential tool for the modern manager, where you understand the struggles and strengths of each employee ⚡.
I have seen the rise in AI-based scheduling apps, such as Motion, which shows a need for a modern time management approach.
Which approach do you think dominates your day?
