As we all know, Twitter has been in decline, being in the crossfire of drama and constant app changes. Despite this, the platform remained strong because there were still valuable voices buzzing around that we couldn't get anywhere else ...
... or until Threads came into the picture 💣
Given his recent announcement of tweet limitations, this couldn't have been worse timing for Musk 🤦♂️
Here's my marketing perspective on how this move killed Twitter 👇
💸 Goodbye, Ad Revenue: All social media platforms rely predominantly on ads. By limiting the number of tweets, he is undermining his own platform. The longer a user is engaged on Twitter, the more exposure to in-app advertisements, leading to more revenue. It is no surprise app campaigns will now be taken to other social platforms.
📚 Loss of Content Value: Twitter's algorithm now curates on a new algorithm of "what they want us to see". All the users with the paid "Blue Checks" get a reach boost. Now users are more likely to see irrelevant advertisements masqued as content.
🧠 Mental Model Shift: Never in the history of Twitter has a user had to consciously regulate their usage. That's not a social media concept! Twitter's addictive cycle of infinite scrolling is now jeopardized.
🔇 Silencing your Creators: Creators who post often are occupying this now limited space. Like any social media, it can only be sustained by those who create content, but the recent changes might discourage this.
What are your thoughts on Twitter new regulations? The end of an era or the beginning of a new one?
